House Cleaning

We all know that cleaning the house is an essential part of the moving process. But, it's easy to get overwhelmed and not know where to start. Or worse, completely overlook a spot only to realize it weeks or months after the move. Avoid the anxiety by following our local moving guide to cleaning up before you even start looking for 'movers near me.'

General Clean-Up & Decluttering

Before you get started on the deep cleaning, you'll want to get on top of the general clean-up. Make sure the floor is clear, garbage is picked up, and the dishes in the sink are done.

It's also a good idea to tackle the decluttering before you move forward with household cleaning for a move. Removing unwanted and broken items from your home will open up more room for packing and cleaning the household as needed. The right moving company may also offer junk removal services to make this part of the process a lot faster.

Take Care of Yard Clean-Up

Don't forget to clean up your yard before a move. Make sure you either pack or let go of yard furniture, potted plants, and lawn care equipment. Before you let go of the lawn care tools, make sure you mow the lawn and give any overgrown plants a good pruning.

Cleaning & Wiping Down Furniture

Since you will be moving furniture away from the walls and disassembling it, you'll probably see a lot of dust and cobwebs on those pieces of furniture.

Get a cleaning cloth with a small amount of cleanser and wipe down all of your furniture as you pack it for the move. You'll love having clean, dust-free furniture to set up in the new home.

Dusting Surfaces

Speaking of dusting, this is also the time to dust all surfaces that are in and around the home. You can wipe down window sills, staircases, and inside kitchen cabinets. You may also want to wipe down the walls with a wet washcloth wrapped around a dust mop to prep them for the next residents.

Washing All Linens and Curtains

As you pack up mattresses and take down curtains, you'll have plenty of linens to wash. Pop these cloth items in the washer and dryer so they are nice and fresh when you unpack them at the new home.

Empty Out Fridge

Don't forget about the refrigerator! You might want to spend a week or two trying to eat up the food in the cupboards rather than packing it in the car. After you've eaten as much as you can, you can donate unopened items to a local food bank. Anything else that you don't want should go in the garbage.

When the fridge is empty, take out any removable shelving and the crisper trays. Wash these with some dish soap in the sink and let dry before reinserting. Wipe down the inside of the empty fridge with a soapy washcloth to remove any food spills and stains.

Clean Appliances

While you are at it, you can also take this time to clean up any other appliances in the home. Clean out the oven and the stove top. Wipe the dishwasher. Wipe down the washer and dryers. Wipe down the microwave and any other small appliances too.

Clean Rooms

After most of your furniture and personal belongings are packed up and out of the way, you'll have plenty of space for a final clean of each room. Here are a few tasks to remember:

  • Sweep or vacuum the floors.
  • Wipe down the baseboards.
  • Wipe down ceiling fan blades and clean glass shades.
  • Wipe down shelves in closets.
  • Clean the windows.
  • Clean the bathroom, including tub, toilet, and sink.
  • Last clean of the kitchen floors, sink, and surfaces.

Clean Garage

If your home has a garage, it will also need cleaning out. First, declutter this space by removing anything you don't want to keep. If you have chemicals, paint, oil, and similar products, you can usually drop them off at a local waste collection center. Check with your city to find out how to properly dispose of these items.

Pack up any items and equipment you are keeping. If you have tools and other equipment with moving parts, consider wiping them clean and applying a little lubricating oil to the components.

If you have a lawn mower and other equipment that uses oil or gasoline, drain these liquids from these pieces of equipment before packing them.

Wipe all surfaces with a soapy wash cloth to remove dust and oil. Sweep up the garage floor.
